Jutting out into the Aegean Sea in the south west corner of Turkey, the Bodrum peninsula blends pine and oleander hills, lush olive groves and mandarin meadows with colourful Turkish fishing villages and ancient ruins, all lapped by sparkling turquoise seas.

Upbeat and lively Gumbet is the closest holiday resort to Bodrum, just a couple of miles across the hill or 5 to 10 minutes away by dolmus.

One of the Mediterranean's most photographed beaches, the fantastic powder white sands and blue lagoon of Olu Deniz are a protected reserve with a small entrance fee payable. Plenty of watersports take place on the main Belcekis Beach and hotels are relaxed with little nightlife although the livelier clubs of Hisaronu are just a short dolmus ride away.

Marmaris enjoys a Riviera feel with a palm lined promenade, smart yacht marina, quayside restaurants and an open-air amphitheatre.

Slightly slower paced than Marmaris, pretty Icmeler is 8 kilometres away and has a more upmarket feel with a broad sandy beach, smart hotels and plenty of restaurants and bars making up its own quite lively nightlife.
