New York is not a city in itself, but a combination of 5 "boroughs" or districts: Brooklyn, The Bronx, Queens, Staten Island and, the most famous of all, Manhattan, which is an island. Manhattan is home to 1.5 million inhabitants and has the highest population density in the US!

Giovani da Verrazano arrived on the shores of New York for the first time in 1524, forty years or so after Christopher Columbus. The English took over in 1664 and rebaptised it New York as a tribute to the Duke of York. In 1792, the city became and international financial centre with the creation of the New York Stock Exchage. Over the years, New York has also made a name for itself as an architectural model with the unveiling of the Statue of Liberty in 1886 and the Empire State Building in 1931. In 2012, the Freedom Tower became the highest building in Manhattan, ahead of the Empire State Building.
