A beach for everyday of the
year
Antigua boasts some of the most beautiful
beaches in the Caribbean with fine white sands lapped by clear
turquoise waters and all of them public. Many of the popular
beaches lie in the north west of Antigua near the capital
of St John's and around the Five Islands peninsula whilst
the scenic southern coast offers natural harbours and beaches
with a touch more seclusion - try Johnson's Point or Turner's
Beach where the crystal clear waters are a kaleidoscope of
rainbow-hued tropical fish. |

Abundant
Watersports
Those seeking thrills and spills in the surf should head for
the vast swathes of Dickenson Bay on the western leeward side
of the island near St John's and the only beach with public
hire of watersports equipment from water skiing, jet skis
and sunfish sailing to parasailing. A good beginner's site
for diving is Cades Reef to the south and around Deep Bay
on the Five Islands peninsula the shallow waters hold numerous
shipwrecks. Across on the eastern Atlantic coast Long Bay
Beach is popular for snorkelling and Half Moon Beach boasts
beautiful fine soft pink sands, wonderful cooling breezes
and excellent windsurfing beyond the reef.
Clear Snorkelling Waters
One of Antigua's best snorkelling spots is Paradise Reef,
a 1-mile coral garden of stunning beauty north of Dickenson
Bay. Plenty more secluded beaches can be found in this area
with excellent snorkelling along the entire fan-shaped northern
crown of Antigua. For a real taste of desert island life beachcombers
can take a trip to the uninhabited offshore Prickly Pear Island,
surrounded by shimmering azure waters and beautiful coral
gardens.
International Yachting
Antigua's coastline is ideal for yacht cruising and racing
with constant trade winds and numerous harbours for exploration.
While the novice takes gingerly to the windsurfer in the transparent
shallows, the more serious yachtsman is making for the deep
water anchorage and international yachting centre of English
Harbour. Antigua's famous Sailing Week takes place in April
with five separate point to point races and end of week prize
giving at the formal Lord Nelson's Ball.
